New River Valley TimeBank presents a Public Living Room on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at the Christiansburg Library's Community Room.

Join us for our public living room and enjoy a cup of tea and a "biscuit" and meeting new people! All are welcome in this no-agenda space hosted by the New River Valley TimeBank and in partnership with Camerados, a group out of the United Kingdom.

Camerados believe that the answer to our problems is each other.

A camerado can be anyone. It’s about chatting to someone new or helping out a stranger (or better yet, asking them to help you) It’s sitting with your neighbour and having a cuppa. It’s asking that stranger at the bus-stop if they’ve got the time. Everyone has tough times and we think it’d be great if people just looked out for one another more. Not fixing each other. Not trying to solve anyone’s problems. Just being a bit more human.

The New River Valley TimeBank is a project of New River Valley Home, a non-profit that works to foster vibrant, lifespan-friendly communities by connecting people, resources and organizations. It has been developed and supported through the efforts of the NRV Livability Initiative and the NRV Aging in Place Leadership Team.

A TimeBank helps to connect people to exchange skills and services, using time rather than dollars. When a member provides one hour of service for someone, they earn one Time Credit. They can then spend this Time Credit by receiving an hour of service from someone else. The possibilities for exchange are endless and may include home repair, animal care, yard work, cooking lessons, computer instruction, etc.

All services are valued equally, and all members are respected for what they have to offer. It is an old idea made new—the idea that our community is stronger when neighbors make a practice of helping each other.
