Description:
The Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents the Inaugural Mary Draper Ingles 42 Mile Hike, Bike, Float Challenge on Thursday, July 25, 2024 starting and ending at Ingles Castle in Radford, VA.

In 1755 after escaping from her captors the Shawnee, Mary Draper Ingles traveled 42 days following the rivers back to her home in the New River Valley. To honor her journey and connect people with places that relate to the Ingles legacy in our local area, the challenge will include several, fun and educational aspects.

Participants will start with a 4.2 mile bike route leaving from Ingles Castle on the Radford side of the river across Memorial Bridge to Hazel Hollow Road and will bike along the New River until they come to Wilderness Road which leads them to the historic site of Ingles Tavern and western ferry landing.

At the Ingles Ferry landing the participants will park their bikes and grab a tube for a leisurely float on the New River back to Ingles Castle. All participants will then return to Ingles Tavern to retrieve bikes and enjoy the historic site with refreshments and awards presentations after completing the 42 Mile Challenge.

In addition to the biking and floating, a hike on your own app to visit Mary Draper Ingles related sites throughout the New River Valley will also be part of the fun. We are calling it the 42 Mile challenge, but in reality it will be part scavenger hunt, part leisurely bike ride on sections of the 76 bike route, and part floating down the river. Through a phone app provide by Pulaski County Tourism, 42 sites throughout the New River Valley will be listed for visiting and or hiking in the two weeks leading up to the Mary Draper Ingles Festival.

Registration includes the innertube and life jacket rental and Challenge t-shirt.

The registration fee is a $42.00 donation to the Wilderness Road Regional Museum and limited to the first 42 people to sign up.
