The Radford University Honors College presents the two-day symposium "Mountains, Rivers, and Roads: Understanding Appalachia" on Friday, October 21, 2022 from 2:30 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Friday Schedule:
• 2:30 PM: "Tensions in Appalachia: The Not-So-Uniqueness of a Unique Region" by Dr. Theresa Burris inside McConnell Library
• 3:30 PM: "Land Acknowledgement and Native American culture in Appalachia: Honoring the land and the original stewards of the Appalachians" by Dr. Melissa Faircloth & Dr. Victoria Ferguson inside McConnell Library
• 5:00-7:00 PM: "Past/Present/Future: a walking tour of Radford" by David Horton, Luc White, & Dr. David Anderson starting at McConnell Library
• 7:00 PM: Appalachia on Film: "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil" inside Bonnie Auditorium
The "Mountains, Rivers and Roads: Understanding Appalachia" symposium is a multi-disciplinary event focused on fostering connections and common ground within this complex region. You will hear academic and non-academic speakers share interests, research, and experiences relating to Appalachia from all corners and vantages.
Highlights include a full schedule of research and community presentations, food experiences, and a live show from the horror fiction podcast Old Gods of Appalachia.
Admission is free and is open to the entire New River Valley community.
Appalachia-inspired food trucks will be on campus throughout the event.
