As part of Blacksburg Sustainability Week 2020, join the Trail Work Service Day with Poverty Creek Trails Coalition on Sunday, September 20, 2020.

There will be two shifts. Shift 1 will be from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Shift 2 will be from 12:00-3:00 pm.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines for physical distancing and a limited number of tools, only eight volunteers can be accommodated during each shift.

Bring a mask and your own work gloves. If you have safety glasses, please also bring those. Wear closed toe sturdy shoes and a bright colored shirt. Bring plenty of water and snacks for yourself.

The Poverty Creek Trails Coalition is an all-volunteer group that works to maintain, improve, and expand local natural trails in our area. Trail building can be strenuous work, but you don't need prior experience.

Children over age 12 are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Sustainability Week, started in 2006, is a week long series of events hosted by a longstanding partnership between the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and Sustainable Blacksburg. The partnership was formed to bring campus and community together to build a more sustainable and resilient community. Sustainability Week received the 2016 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award.

Because of the COVID19 pandemic, most of the Sustainability Week events will be virtual and the handful of in-person events will be outdoors with physical distancing.

All events are free.

Directions to Poverty Creek Trails: Meet up at base of Queen Anne Trail in the Jefferson National Forest (Take 460 toward Giles County, turn left onto Forest Service Road 708 at the top of Gap Mountain, follow Forest Service Road for ~1 mile and park at the upper entrance to Queen Anne Trail).

This will be the first in a series of programs and projects offered throughout the year, a new approach, being called “Sustainability through the Seasons.” This new approach will enable the partners to engage campus and the community with events and programming better suited for the seasons, such as tree plantings (fall) and the City Nature Challenge (spring).
