Description:
St. Philip's Anglican Church presents an Art and Iconography Symposium on Saturday, December 2, 2017.

All are invited to attend a talk by Los Angeles-based iconographer Jonathan Edwards as well as a Q&A session immediately following the talk. His talk, titled “The What, How, and Why of Icons,” will explore the relationship of art and theology as well as explain the process of iconography.

Iconography, as a branch of art history, studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images: the subjects depicted, the particular compositions and details used to do so, and other elements that are distinct from artistic style.

Jonathan Edwards holds degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, MO where earned two different Bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Fine Arts. He also graduated from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. He was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at Yale University in Fine Arts, and taught at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts before teaching at The Rhode Island School of Design.

He spent several years teaching at Brown University before pursuing his real passion, Iconography, full-time. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California and has taught Iconography in religious communities around Moscow, Russia. Jonathan has presented his work in venues from New York City to Los Angeles and is currently completing a project in Charlottesville, VA with over two hundred characters in an Icon depicting All Saints.

The event is free of charge. Donations will be accepted on behalf of the speaker to cover expenses.

St. Philip’s Anglican Church is located at 306 Progress Street in Blacksburg, VA.
