Description:
The Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation presents Soul Food Tasting on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Luke and Odd Fellows Hall.

Celebrate Black History Month with a "Soul Food Sampling"!

Three different seating times are available:
• 12:00 PM
• 2:00 PM
• 4:00 PM

Join us as we discuss and taste soul food and explore its historical roots. What are the traditions that make this cuisine truly original? Where did the term “soul food” come from and what does it symbolize? What are the special ingredients and preparation methods that characterize soul food? How does it differ from other American cuisines? Most importantly, how does it taste?

Guests will also have the opportunity to engage in conversation with former residents of New Town, an African American neighborhood during segregation. The St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall, the last remaining structure of New Town, served as the community well from the early 1900's until the mid 1960’s. They hosted social events, gathered for music and enjoyment, and created a sense of community. Over time the neighborhood disappeared, but the St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall remains and now serves as an important reminder of the resilience, pride, self-reliance, and community spirit of the people who lived in New Town as well as the injustice that segregation imposed.

Seating is limited so tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 540-558-0746 or by stopping by the Alexander Black House & Cultural Foundation during regular business hours, 10 AM - 4 PM, Tuesday-Saturday.

Presented by the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation, the Odd Fellows Committee, the Virginia Tech Foundation, the North End Merchants, Downtown Blacksburg Inc., Champs Downtown Sportsbar & Cafe, and Blue Ridge Mountain Catering & Wikitera Café.
