Description:
Glencoe Museum & Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the gallery show, “Colors,” art by Knic Umstead. The Gallery will celebrate the opening with a reception for Umstead on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
“Colors” is a visually eclectic and thought-provoking show, reflecting the multiple artistic talents of Knic Umstead—he identifies himself as an oil painter, illustrator, graphic designer and collagist. All of these elements of his art are on display in “Colors,” which according to the artist is the combination of three of his art series: Colors/Quiltage, Series Transparent and Blumenati Series.
Everyone is welcome to attend the art opening. There is no admission charge. “Colors” will be on display through the first week of October.
Knic Umstead was born in Southern Michigan in 1980 and moved to southwestern Virginia at a very early age. Even though his family returned to Michigan to visit relatives, he identifies the Appalachian Mountains as home. Growing up in the small town of Clifton Forge, he has had an interest in the visual arts since childhood. He first realized that he wanted to be an artist in 2nd grade when his peers praised a drawing he had made of a cartoon character. He has made art ever since.
Umstead received his BFA with a painting concentration from Radford University in 2002, and his MFA from the same institution 8 years later. He has now come full circle, teaching at Radford University and instructing at the Governor’s School for the Arts during the summer. Colors is his 5th solo show and the 19th show he has had in the area since 2005, when he started living with his wife, Pris Sears, and their cat Bacco in Blacksburg.
