Description:
The Radford Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce that B. Scott Crawford will present, “Domesticity or Death: Decoding a Nineteenth Century Portrait,” at the Radford Public Library on Tuesday, April 7th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

In his talk, Crawford will explore a painting by artist Lilly Martin Spencer and will reveal hidden meanings behind the imagery.

Everyone is welcome. There is no admission charge.

Lilly Martin Spencer is known in the realm of art history for her genre paintings that reflect 19th century ideals about domesticity. However, a simple portrait of a mother and child suggests there is much more to Spencer than what the historiography surrounding her advances! Come join B. Scott Crawford as he shares the relationship he developed with the painting that resulted in his uncovering secrets held within the portrait, finding new insight into Spencer's creative process, and uncovering evidence to suggest the lens used to understand Spencer needs to be widened!

B. Scott Crawford has twenty years experience in education and continues to research and to teach history courses through Virginia Western Community College and a seminar on business decision making as part of Virginia Tech's “A Toolkit for 21st Century Leaders” program. Crawford also serves as the vice president of professional development, training and financial literacy for Member One Federal Credit Union.

The Spring Lecture Series will explore the role of women in history through the perspectives of fashion, art, and groundbreaking experiences.
