Description:
Live at The Lyric presents Scythian in their opening concert of their 2014/2015 season on Wednesday, September 24th at The Lyric Theatre.
Most often characterized as Celtic/Celtic Rock, Scythian's music reaches beyond the Emerald Isle blending elements of Celtic, Klezmer, Gaelic, Gypsy, and Rock to create a truly unique sound. All children of first-generation immigrants, Scythian's music is a reflection of the band's polyglot identity, including Irish, Jordanian, Ukrainian, and Austrian. Dan Fedoryka, the group's guitarist and accordionist says, “This is who we are. People want to call us a Celtic band, and we do a lot of Celtic, but it’s gypsy-infused, you’ll hear a lot of bluegrass, and it has funk backbeats.”
All classically trained prior to discovering folk music, Scythian sees themselves as a melting pot of different cultures. Taking seemingly disparate threads the band develops tasteful arrangements of traditional fiddle tunes coupled with exotic rhythms, including using a variety of percussion including djembe and doumbek, all while maintaining a fast-and-loose approach to both the genre(s) and their own ethnic identity. The 2009 winner of Washington City Paper's Best of DC 'Best Local Band' competition, Scythian's live performance is incendiary and is sure to deliver a stomper from traditional jigs and reels to contemporary covers.
