The Laughing Brain Initiative presents the Humorous Storytelling Workshop Study: A Clinical Intervention for Female Military Veterans on Friday, February 20, 2026 in the Embodied Brain Lab located within the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech.

The pilot study is a single-group, pretest–posttest design with ten other participants where you will learn to use humor to create stories centered around stories of hardship.
The writing workshop will last six weeks, once per week in two-hour sessions via Zoom on Thursdays from 5:00-7:00 PM. You will also attend a two-hour pre- and post-intervention testing at the Embodied Brain Lab, where you will answer a series of questions, play computer games, participate in storytelling sessions, and have your body and brain activity recorded via EEGs.
Eligibility Criteria:
• Female born military veteran
• PTSD diagnosis (self-reported and verified during pre-intervention visit)
• The ability to provide your Social Security Number
Participants will receive up to $100 in compensation for participation.
How often do participants need to come to the Virginia Tech campus for the study. Once for pretesting (approximately two hours), once for post-testing (approximately two hours), once for EEG storytelling day. The six-week storytelling workshop will be conducted via Zoom.
