The Indigenous Community at Virginia Tech presents the Native American Heritage Month Harvest Festival: Honoring the Lumbee People of the Dark Water – Elevating Indigenous Food Sovereignty in Appalachia on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at the Indigenous Community Garden at Virginia Tech located at the Virginia Tech Turfgrass Research Center.
Join the Indigenous Community at Virginia Tech as we conclude Native American Heritage Month with our annual Harvest Festival. The event will also include a cultural food tasting, hands-on workshops such as a nixtamalization workshop, a tea tasting workshop, and a Traditional Eastern Woodland ceramic table.
This event is hosted and coordinated by the Indigenous Community Garden at Virginia Tech (ICG), which serves as a living space for community-based agricultural work, seed-saving initiatives, and cultural knowledge-sharing.
This celebration honors the Peoples who steward the Longleaf Pines by featuring cultural dishes that represent the traditional and contemporary Southeastern Woodland Lumbee Peoples of the Dark Water. Chef Lt. Col. (Ret) René Locklear White from the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will lead a featured presentation expressing Lumbee foods and traditional foodways tied to the Lumbee identity. Journey through Lumbee food traditions, past, present, and future. Experience a day filled with rich dishes, storytelling, presentations, and workshops at the Indigenous Community Garden at Virginia Tech (ICG) as we celebrate community, culture, and the continued work toward Indigenous food sovereignty.
The event is free and open to the public though reservations are required.

In addition, there will be presentations from various Virginia Tech departments, programs, and Indigenous advocacy student organizations, showcasing ongoing efforts to support Indigenous scholarship, sustainability, and community collaboration offered at Virginia Tech.
