The Jessie Peterman Library presents an Author Talk with Paul Quigley on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Join us for an author talk with Virginia Tech professor, Paul Quigley. He'll be speaking about his upcoming book, "The Man Behind the Cane: Preston Brooks, Political Violence, and the Road to the Civil War". The book offers a new perspective on the life of the United States politician best known for the infamous assault that paved the bloody road to the Civil War.

Paul Quigley is Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies and the James I. Robertson, Jr. Associate Professor of Civil War History in the History Department at Virginia Tech. He also serves as the Director of Virginia Tech’s Center for Humanities. Originally from Manchester, England, he holds degrees from Lancaster University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Quigley is the author of the prize-winning "Shifting Grounds: Nationalism and the American South, 1848-65" and the forthcoming book "The Man Behind the Cane: Preston Brooks, Political Violence, and the Road to the Civil War", which will be published in spring 2026, but is available for preorder.

This is the third annual author event sponsored by the Floyd County Library Building Fund.
