Description:
Warm Hearth Village continues their Warm Hearth Village Connection Series with the program "Is that a scam?" on Friday, October 24, 2025 at Warm Hearth Village Center.
Online fraud is evolving fast. Join Dr. Katalin Parti of the Virginia Tech Cybercriminology Lab, for a video-driven, research-backed look at how scams workand how our brains (young and old) process deception. Using real case videos from the PROS project, we’ll step into the scammer’s perspective, unpack the psychological hooks that make messages feel urgent. You’ll leave with a simple, evidence-based “how to think” playbook to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Katalin Parti, Ph.D., is an associate professor at Virginia Tech and a Fulbright and Max Planck Scholar. Working at the intersection of sociology, criminology, and the arts, she pairs mixed-methods research with community-based, theatre-informed interventions that translate evidence into protection strategies. She has 80+ publications, is editor/author of five books, and serves on editorial boards for two journals.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
