Description:
The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies presents the lecture and webinar "How Medicine Changed the Civil War" on Thursday, October 2, 2025 online on Zoom.
Join author Lindsay Rae Smith Privette for an online discussion of the recently published "The Surgeon’s Battle: How Medicine Won the Vicksburg Campaign and Changed the Civil War".
The campaign and siege for Vicksburg is perhaps one of the best studied military operations of the Civil War. It is heralded as a strategic victory for the Union war effort and celebrated for its tactical innovation. And yet, despite such attention, the Army of the Tennessee’s medical accomplishments have remained largely overlooked. In a talk drawing on her new book, The Surgeon’s Battle: How Medicine Won the Vicksburg Campaign and Changed the Civil War, Lindsay Rae Smith Privette centers soldiers’ health and medical care in the Union Army’s fight to take Vicksburg. In doing so, she offers new insight into the development of the army’s medical systems as officers learned to adapt to their circumstances and prove themselves responsible stewards of soldiers’ bodies.
The talk is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
