Radford University presents the Robert Gipe Reading as part of the 2025 Highland Summer Conference on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 inside room 1016 Hemphill Hall on the campus of Radford University.

The Highlander Summer Conference is back for another year of writing, reading and creative community. Robert Gipe, author of "Trampoline", "Weedeater" and "Pop" among other works will be reading and speaking as part of The Highland Summer Conference.

The writing workshop features guest Robert Gipe, an award-winning Appalachian novelist whose work is reshaping the way people think about Appalachia today. He won the 2015 Weatherford Award for outstanding novel for "Trampoline", a novel that blends his unique visual style with a funny, heartbreaking story. The second and third novels, "Weedeater" and "Pop", are also available from Ohio University Press. In 2021, the trilogy won the Judy Gaines Young Book Award.

From 1997 to 2018, Gipe directed the Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College Appalachian Program in Harlan. Gipe is founding producer of the Higher Ground community performance series, served as script consultant for the Hulu series Dopesick, and was a producer on the feature film The Evening Hour.

The Highland Summer Writers' Conference is a one-week intensive workshop offered annually by Radford University that is team-taught by well-known guest writers. It offers the opportunity to study and practice creative and expository writing within the context of regional culture. This year the conference runs from July 14th - 18th.
