Historic Smithfield presents their Annual Independence Day Fincastle Resolves Event on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Schedule of Events:
• 10:00 AM: Historian Dave Robbins presents Lecture "The Battle of Point Pleasant and Lord Dunmore's War"
• 11:00 AM: Dramatic Reading of the Fincastle Resolutions, the Declaration of Independence and the Emancipation Proclamation
• 12:00 PM: Music from Corbin Hayslett & His New River Buddies
• 1:00 PM: Announcement and Reading of the Smithfield Essay Contest Winner

Smithfield will commemorate the Fincastle Resolves, a prelude to the Declaration of Independence that William Preston helped fashion and Independence itself, with living history, a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, refreshments and historic crafts and trades.

Guests can sample colonial sweets (first come, first serve), experience life in a Revolutionary War Militia from Malcolm Whittaker and learn about historic crafts & trades like flax spinning.

We're thrilled to announce Corbin Hayslett & His New River Buddies will be performing live starting at noon. This talented group features banjo, fiddle, guitar, and bass, bringing you the best of old time and bluegrass music.

Originally from Lynchburg, Virginia, Corbin Hayslett grew up around his father and mother’s musical talents in religious and secular music. From an early age he was singing and cultivating a passion for bluegrass, old time, and traditional Americana and southern musical forms. He picked up the banjo at age 9, and has been playing music ever since!

Hethwood Market will be on site with their menu of BBQ Pork, Vegetarian Spaghetti, Veggie Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Assorted Desserts, Kettle Corn and more available for purchase.

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5.00.
