Description:
The New River Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society presents the Annual National Forest Appreciation Day on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Pandapas Pond in Blacksburg, VA.
National Forest Appreciation Day is a special educational outreach that the New River Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society hosts each year at Pandapas Pond. In 2017, our chapter president, Mary Rhoades, suggested to the mayor of Blacksburg that the town create a local event to promote the nearby Jefferson national forest as a place to visit and appreciate. The mayor signed a proclamation that the last Saturday in June is National Appreciation Forest Day. We choose a different subject each year, and then put up a table out at the pond and talk to whoever shows up that day and is curious to learn about our topic.
This year our topic is insects of the forest. There will be information about forest insects, as well as pictures or photos of insects. And, we hope to offer children the chance to walk around and catch insects, which they love to do.
The iNaturalist page for the insects of the Jefferson National forest provides a glimpse into the many insects to be found and it can be viewed at:

Pandapas Pond is located at Forest Service Road 808 in Blacksburg, VA.
