The Lyric Theatre presents "Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project" with Filmmaker Talkback on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Join us for a special encore screening of the 2023 documentary "Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project" as we honor beloved Virginia Tech professor, New River Valley resident, and American icon, Nikki Giovanni.

This special screening will be followed by a talkback with filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson.

"Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project" travels through time and space to reveal the enduring influence of Nikki Giovanni, one of America's greatest artists and social commentators of the past century. Giovanni reckons with the inevitable passing of time in intimate vérité and revealing archival footage. The film is a collision of memories, moments in American history, live readings, and visually innovative treatments of her poetry. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance and an Emmy for Outstanding Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking.
