Description:
The Jessie Peterman Library presents the program "Straw Bale Houses! Building with Natural Materials: Performance, Process, and Possibilities" on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
A design/build architect and instructor, a general contractor builder, and two aspiring owner-builders join together in a panel to explore the performance, process, and possibilities of natural building. Bring your curiosity and questions.
The program will explore:
• What "natural building" really means.
• The building science behind why rodents, water, and fire are no match for building with straw and hemp/lime.
• The health benefits of these materials.
• An overview of the construction process.
• The possibilities for the future for straw bale panels and hemp/lime in the Southwest Virginia region.
The Panel Members include:
• Juan Andrés is a designer and builder of natural buildings. He has been learning and practicing natural building techniques since graduating from Architecture school back in 2013. Juan moved to Floyd in 2019 to help one of his best friends build their dream home insulated with hemp. He continues to practice in the region and teaches a Natural Building Certificate program with Yestermorrow Design. Build School in Waitsfield, Vermont.
• Saucha Atma Ananda became a builder because of an interest in natural building as a solution to the challenge of building affordable, healthy homes. After learning to build, Saucha started a small construction company with his business partner, Adam, called Atma Construction. He is currently building the first straw bale house and participating in the build of the first hemp house in Franklin County, Virginia.
• Kerry O'Connor and Anand Raghunathan are aspiring owner-builders with backgrounds in innovation and materials science respectively. They have been traveling the country attending natural building courses at The Canelo Project, CalEarth, Muddauber School of Natural Building, and Yestermorrow Design.Build School.
The Jessie Peterman Library is located at 321 West Main Street in Floyd, VA.
