Description:
The Hahn Horticulture Garden presents a Learn at Lunch titled "Invasions and Symbiosis with Bryan Brown" on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 inside the Peggy Lee Hahn Garden Pavilion on the campus of Virginia Tech.

We typically think about biological invasions in terms of their direct effects: competition with, predation on, or herbivory on native species. However, the indirect effects of invasions may be no less severe.

We will discuss how invasive crayfish not only have direct effects on natives, but also disrupt the symbiotic interactions between native crayfish and their symbionts. This disruption results in decreased health of native crayfish as well as increases in crayfish plague disease on native hosts, thus providing a "back door" mechanism of invasion for non-native species.

This is a free event, no registration needed. Parking passes will be provided to attendees.
