Description:
Mist on the Mountain presents Traditional Irish Musicians Brian Conway and Don Penzien in concert on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Odd Fellows Building Lodge #20 on Wilson Avenue in Blacksburg, VA.
We are happy to sponsor an evening of Irish music with master Irish musicians Brian Conway and Don Penzien!
Brian Conway performs with a skill, grace, and force that are steeped in Irish tradition but distinctively his own. He is one of the best Irish fiddlers of his generation and one of the leading exponents of the Sligo fiddling style made famous by the late Michael Coleman. An All-Ireland Senior Fiddle competition winner in 1986, Brian studied with several fiddle masters, including his father, Jim, of Co. Tyrone, Limerick-born fiddler/teacher Martin Mulvihill, and legendary fiddler and composer Martin Wynne who taught him the real secrets of the Sligo style. In addition to performing, Brian is also a very well-respected fiddle teacher and has taught and mentored numerous All-Ireland Fiddle champions.

Don Penzien is much sought after as an accompanist in Irish traditional music. Known for his dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar, he can provide solid, driving rhythm for traditional tunes or sensitive accompaniment to songs and airs. Don has backed many well-known Irish musicians (e.g., Gerry O’Connor, Randal Bays, Tim Britton, Jimmy Crowley, John Williams, Pat Broaders, Gabe Donohue, Tony DeMarco, Billy McComiskey) and can frequently be found on the road playing concerts with Brian Conway, John Whelan, Máirtín de Cógáin and Haley Richardson. Don currently resides in NC, where he is a Professor in the School of Medicine at Wake Forest School University.
Admission is a $15.00 suggested donation.
Bring your own refreshments and something to share if you are so inclined.
There is very limited parking on-site so guests are encouraged to use the downtown lots off Progress Street.
