Description:
Virginia Tech presents Rural Education Summit 2023 with Community Keynote Speaker Beth Macy on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech.

Bestselling author Beth Macy will provide our Community Keynote which will focus on the intersection of rural schooling and community health and wellness. Few authors possess the ability to capture the essence of a region quite like Beth Macy. With an unyielding devotion to Southwest Virginia and its people, Macy’s work delves deep into the lives of the overlooked and underprivileged, mirroring her own experiences growing up as someone who faced adversity head-on.

Beth Macy is a Virginia-based journalist who writes about outsiders and underdogs. Raised poor in a small Ohio community, she is the award-winning author of three New York Times bestselling books examining rural communities left behind by corporate greed and political indifference. Her first book, "Factory Man", explored the aftermath of globalization and won a J. Anthony Lukas Prize. "Dopesick" was short-listed for the Carnegie Medal, won the L.A. Times Book Prize for Science and Technology, and was described as a “masterwork of narrative nonfiction” by The New York Times.

Beth Macy is a New York Times-bestselling author and known for her books "Dopesick", "Factory Man" and "Truevine" and "Raising Lazarus". Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and she has repeatedly been on the New York Times Bestseller List.

"Dopesick" was made into a Emmy-winning Hulu series, on which Macy served as executive producer and co-writer. Her follow-up book, "Raising Lazarus", tells the story of the third wave of the crisis, driven by the introduction of new, highly addictive opioids such as fentanyl. Outsiders, underdogs and the importance of hope are key features of her work. Her books reflect a deep respect for the stories of marginalized people and communities, dogged persistence in her research, and a gift for telling complicated stories in a compelling way.

Macy’s work as a newspaper reporter, mostly at The Roanoke Times won more than two dozen national journalism awards including a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard. She won a J. Anthony Lukas Prize for "Factory Man" and an L.A. Times Book Prize for "Dopesick". All of her books were instant New York Times bestsellers.

Her work has also been featured in Oprah magazine, PARADE, American Journalism Review, Salon, the Christian Science Monitor and "The Best Newspaper Writing" anthology.
