The Town of Floyd continues its 6th Annual Floyd Small Town Summer series with Johnathan Scales Fourchestra and Hoppie Vaughan & The Ministers of Soul on Thursday, August 17, 2023 outside at Warren G. Lineberry Memorial Park.

Tentative Event Schedule:
• 6:00 PM: Gates Open
• 6:30 PM: Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
• 8:00 PM: Hoppie Vaughan & The Ministers of Soul

The Town of Floyd offers this series of free events to provide a fun, family-friendly atmosphere in downtown Floyd, VA. Featuring music, movies, face-painting, inflatables, games, food and beverage and special activities presented by a variety of community organizations!

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra performs jazz and rock fusion and is based in Asheville, North Carolina.

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Jonathan Scales is likely the most innovative steel drummer on the planet. His stunning, virtuosic technique is obvious and apparent to any who have seen him perform, but it is his mesmerizing compositions and tasteful, avant-garde improvisation that set him apart from the pack. Scales’ unmistakably unique approach to an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropicalia establishes him as something of an outlier.

Whereas his talent and creativity could have been focused on other instruments he plays, such as saxophone, he fell in love with the sound of the steel pans. He may also have unconsciously seen it as a challeng to transform the instrument in much the same way that his musical inspiration Bela Fleck did with the banjo.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has a fluid line-up, allowing Jonathan to work with a wide range of artists, and in the past few years he has earned the respect of some of the most impressive players across multiple genres. With an ear for myriad global sounds, it only makes sense for Jonathan Scales Fourchestra to expand beyond North America. They toured Central America, the Caribbean, Japan and Europe in the Fall of 2015, and a performance in The Netherlands landed them a spot on the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in the Summer of 2016. Jonathan Scales has his eyes on the world, for sure.

The diversely talented Hoppie Vaughan is all about the soul! He is a blue eyed soul singer, song writer, guitar and bass player. Besides performing solo, he is the front man for Hoppie Vaughan and the Ministers of Soul based out of Roanoke, VA performing classic soul, R&B, blues and funk.

The Small Town Summer Event Series is free and open to the public.

Bring your lawn chair and/or blanket.

Gates will be open and access provided to the public starting at 6:00 PM on all Floyd Small Town Summer events. Movies will begin when the sun goes down.

The events take place on alternating Thursdays from mid-June to the end of August.
