The Summer Arts Festival concludes their Free Thursday Night Indoor Concerts with a Community Sing of Joseph Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass" on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.

Capture the magic of the summer season with this evocative program inspired by poetry and nature. This collection of works spans the centuries with pieces from composers familiar and possibly new. Share moments of inspiration by Valerie Coleman, Germaine Tailleferre, Gabriela Lena Frank, and more.

Arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition, Haydn wrote the Nelson Mass during a time of turmoil and war when Vienna itself was under threat of Napoleon. He originally named the mass Missa in augustiis (Mass for troubled times), but following Lord Nelson’s defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile, the mass became the Lord Nelson Mass. Conducted by Larry Wyatt.

The concert will be performed as a Community Sing. It's free to participate with rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00 PM at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church from July 5th through July 27th. Singers need to commit to at least five of the seven practices with the final two rehearsals on July 24th and July 26th being mandatory.

Thursday night concerts return for the second year in the Summer Arts Festival and again include the popular community-sing concert.

Thursday Night Indoor Concerts are presented by Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg as part of the 2023 Summer Arts Festival.

Blacksburg Presbyterian Church is located at 701 Church Street Southeast in Blacksburg, VA.
