Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, is an American holiday that celebrates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy. On June 19, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued on January 1, 1863, was read to enslaved African Americans in Texas by Gordon Granger. Formerly enslaved people in Galveston celebrated after the announcement, and the following year, organized the first of what became an annual celebration of freedom.
The event will continue the tradition of honoring enslaved people from the area. Names will be written on biodegradable paper and affixed to the campus Wishing Tree at Solitude.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
The event is sponsored by Solitude in connection with Diversity Education, Engagement and the More than a Fraction Foundation.
Solitude is located at 705 West Campus Drive in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
