The Floyd County Historical Society presents a presentation "Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia" by Ricky Cox on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at The Floyd Center for the Arts.
The presentation led by Ricky Cox on “Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia” begins with a discussion of Oral Folklore, including dialect, proverbial expressions, riddles, and folk narratives, like jokes and legends. Customary Folklore, including superstitions and beliefs associated with daily life, for example following signs for planting, harvesting, and managing livestock and beliefs and practices connected to significant life events (birth, marriage, death) will be discussed briefly. The program will conclude with a few minutes of music, which like many folk traditions encompasses both oral and customary folklore.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
The Floyd County Historical Society starts at 10:30 AM and the program starts at 11:00 AM.
