Please join us for a night of music, community, fundraising and celebration of Mark Proctor! Enjoy live performances by some of Mark’s favorite local bands including Jake Retting, Flirting with Chemicals and The CC Coates Band.

We are dedicating a night to celebrate Mark and to establish an ongoing fund, in Mark’s name, to benefit local musicians who are on a dedicated path of music, or who could use a helping hand to get on that path. Mark believed in creativity, especially through music, and we believe he would be honored to know his name will live on in this way.

At Dogtown, there are certain community members that leave a “Mark” on our staff, our customers, and our business as a whole. Mark Proctor is one of them. Mark passed unexpectedly in February this year. He was a staple of our community and a long-time, regular customer at Dogtown. His kind and warm hearted spirit had a special kind of humor that uplifted anyone he came in contact with, young and old. He loved creativity and music– he rarely missed live music on our stage and happily showed his support for local music and the dedicated, talented musicians who provide it to our sweet Floyd town.

Jake Retting is a singer songwriter playing free form rock and roll blending poetry and storytelling based in Floyd, Virginia.

He is also part of the Velvet Spring music collective along with Thurman Felker.

Flirting with Chemicals, Floyd Virginia’s Neo-psychedelic dance band draws inspiration from many sacred sources including Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Yo La Tengo, Guided by Voices, The Byrds, Sparklehorse, Brian Eno and Bob Dylan. The song writing team of Barb Gillespie and Jeff Liverman deliver haunting lyrics coupled with elegant melodies and rhythms. Stephen Wallace on keyboard, Rick Hall on bass and Fred Harris on drums join Jeff and Barb in Flirting with Chemicals. Their skill and talent perfectly support the music and experience.

Flirting with Chemicals positions itself at a strange country crossroads. Hailing from a tiny, but musically significant town of Floyd, Virginia, they have one foot in the Appalachian Mountains and the other in the gritty sounds of the city. In the other orientation, their sound is of today but ghosts from the past creep into their arrangements and compositions. Echos of Neil Young’s plaintive voice, Charlie Patton’s gravel road vocal and the hypnotic musings of Eno make their way into this strange, beautiful and highly intoxicating music.

The CC Coates Band performs blues, soul and rock n roll. Sung by the real deal and backed by a hell of a band.

We will be taking donations to establish a fund in Mark’s name that will benefit local musicians in their learning and growth. For this event, 100% of donations will go to the Floyd local Handmade Music School: Share the Music scholarship programs. These incredible scholarships offer any person who cannot afford music learning opportunities the ability to do so by filling out a simple form requesting the funds for the program of their choice, no questions asked.

A donation station will be on site through the night for you to make your contribution by cash or credit card. The night will be live streamed as well.

An online donation link will be offered throughout the live stream so that even if you cannot join us in person, you can still make a donation in Mark’s name. To donate online, visit: https://www.paypal.com/donate?token=97QqRZhd_CoFPTQY1LXP_ZdhCTtyeyAKUGtGrYX8aYVAzqFk0PblULMgpBGr4j4twRBXro83skkD6l1M.

Dogtown will donate 20% of sales for the night if total donation goal of $2,500 is reached!
