Flutes and Ladders was composed in 2019 for two flutes and piano and
is dedicated to the musicians who premiered the work: Elizabeth Lantz,
Tabatha Peters, and Sarah Rushing. Since then, the work has been
rescored for various instrumental combinations including the version for
solo flute and electronics presented on this occasion. The work explores
connections between common practice European classical music rhythms,
and rhythms and electronic sounds characteristic of various recent forms
of pop music, notably hip hop and rock.
Flutist Elizabeth Lantz is Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Performing Arts. A versatile performer and educator, she has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States and internationally, with engagements in Trinidad, South America, Canada, Europe, the Baltics, and South Korea. She regularly presents masterclasses and lecture-recitals, and her recent performances include featured appearances at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) in Seoul and the National Flute Association (NFA) Annual Convention in San Antonio.
With over 450 premieres, pianist Shannon Wettstein has performed at Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella Series, the Ft. Worth Modern Art Museum, and Chicago’s Constellation. Shannon has been a professor of piano at Michigan State University, St. Cloud State University, Augsburg University, and Bemidji State University. With performances on four continents, she is a clinician, lecturer, coach, and the host of Dr. Avant-Garde, a podcast about moving the art of music forward in the 21st century.
