The Blacksburg High School Bird Club, the New River Valley Bird Club and The Bird Club at Virginia Tech present the New River Valley Public Bird Walks on Saturday, May 6, 2023 starting at multiple local locations to be announced after registration.

The NRV Big Day is a birding fundraising and outreach event hosted by the local bird clubs of the New River Valley. It is hosted at the peak of spring songbird migration, when hundreds upon thousands of gorgeous, serenading songbirds navigate northward through the mountains of Virginia.

Experienced birders from the Blacksburg High School Bird Club, the NRV Bird Club and The Bird Club at Virginia Tech will host bird walks at several locations in the New River Valley. These will highlight the many species of gorgeous, inquisitive, mysterious birds that we can find locally.

A small entry fee of $5.00 for those ages 16 & up will be charged for attending the bird walks, going directly to the Virginia Society of Ornithology, our primary regional authority for birding and bird research. Fees for newcomers will be collected at the meeting sites.

Participants will be contacted with the meetup location and other necessary information. Our goal is to make birding accessible to everyone, so if you have a physical disability that would require consideration (e.g. wheelchair), please contact us using the "Contact" tab and we will do our best to make accommodations as necessary. The group with the highest species count (seen by all observers in the party) will win a prize.

The idea for a local New River Valley Big Day 2023 began with Blacksburg High School's young birders. Taking inspiration from the international Global Big Day hosted by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, this event is a locally competitive version. Instead of gearing the event solely toward birders, community outreach was also a high priority.

A final optional meeting will take place at 7:00 PM, providing an opportunity to connect with other participants and local birders. Awards will be presented to the most successful birders and birding groups.
