Description:
The Jessie Peterman Library presents the class "Fungi 101 - Regenerative Mushroom Cultivation" on Sunday, December 11, 2022.

This presentation and discussion will provide a fun, immersive introduction to the fascinating 5th Kingdom - Fungi led by mushroom expert Matthew Reiss. We will explore easy, low-tech/low-input mushroom cultivation techniques that folks can easily employ in their home and garden. Participants will learn about the lifecycle and the ecology of fungi and gain a fundamental understanding of growing gourmet mushrooms using common household items and agricultural byproducts.

Topics will include selecting appropriate mushroom species, choosing suitable growing mediums, integrating mushroom cultivation into your home and garden, and preparing and cooking a variety of mushrooms.

Matthew Reiss is the owner and operator of Gnomestead Hollow Farm and Forage, a commercial mushroom farm and vegetable ferment business located in the New River Valley area of Southwest Virginia. In addition to mushroom farming and ferment production, Matthew recently graduated with an M.S. in Architecture from Virginia Tech, where he studied and taught courses in biodesign using edible mushroom mycelia and residual crop biomass.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

Jessie Peterman Library is located at 321 West Main Street in Floyd, VA.
