The Virginia Tech Union presents Trampled by Turtles with special guests Apache Relay on Wednesday, November 13th in Burruss Auditorium.

Trampled by Turtles is an indie folk and progressive bluegrass band from Duluth, Minnesota. Lead vocals and guitar player, Dave Simonett, started the band after being robbed of his instruments by car thieves while he performed with his former band. Left with nothing more than his acoustic guitar, Simonett began to explore the world of bluegrass and folk with four other members new to the genre.

The group’s fifth album, Palomino was featured on the Billboard’s bluegrass chart Top 10 for 52 weeks straight. Esquire Magazine describes their music as “supercharged songs with a hooky playfulness and white-knuckle power.”

Apache Relay is an indie roots band from Nashville, TN. The band was formed by chance in a Nashville college dorm when Michael Ford Jr. (vocals, bass) met Mike Harris (guitar, vocals). Ford Jr. happened to be looking for some musicians to help perform his own music live, when he heard about Harris’ newly formed band, The Apache Relay. Ford Jr. hired the trio, which also included Brett Moore (keys, guitar, mandolin) and Kellen Wenrich (fiddle), to back him at a show and it was immediately evident that the four musicians had a unique chemistry and were on to something special.

The band released their debut LP in 2009 and capitalized on the initial success of their debut with relentless touring. The band performed over 100 dates in 2011 alone, including coveted spots opening for Grammy nominated Mumford & Sons, and a breakout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
