Join us at Glencoe Museum on Saturday, September 14, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for a special visit with “Mrs. Wharton” as portrayed by Sandi Curd.

Dalton Intermediate history teacher Sandi Curd will be interpreting the life of Anne Rebecca Wharton during her years as lady of the Glencoe household. And as any proper lady of the 19th century would do, light refreshments will be provided to guests.

Anne Rebecca, or Nannie as friends and family called her, was the eldest daughter of Dr. John Blair Radford. She was educated at her family’s log cabin school and went on to study at a female academy. During the Civil War years she met and married Col. Gabriel C. Wharton, who went on to become General Wharton. The couple settled in what is now Radford and built their home Glencoe in 1870.

In addition to visiting with “Mrs. Wharton,” visitors to the museum can also explore the Wharton household, history exhibits and art gallery. History Exhibits include the display on Mary Draper Ingles, railroad history in southwest Virginia, and the life and times of Dr. Radford. The art gallery will have the works of Alexander Crookshanks. Glencoe Museum also houses the Radford Visitor’s Center where visitors can learn about all the region has to offer.

The weekend of September 14 and 15 is a special weekend throughout Virginia when visitors can explore many of Virginia’s historic homes free of charge. To find a listing of participating museums, check out the website: http://www.historicalhomes.virginia.gov/

Glencoe Museum is located at 600 Unruh Drive in Radford, VA. Admission to the museum is always free of charge. Donations are welcome.
