Description:
Historic Smithfield Plantation invites everyone to join them for their annual Juneteenth Celebration on the steps of Smithfield on Friday, June 14th.

Abraham Lincoln will read the Emancipation Proclamation and a descendant of a slave freed here in the New River Valley will offer a response.

The name Juneteenth is a contraction of June 18th and 19th, which were the dates in 1865 that the last slaves in Galveston, Texas found out that the Civil War was over and they had been freed. Celebrations all over the nation commemorate African American freedom and celebrate education and achievement.
