Description:
The Jacksonville Center for the Arts offers the five day class Wood Firing your Ceramics with Steve Mitchell meeting from October 23-27th and 30th.
The class times are as follows:
Wed-Thur 9am-5pm, Fri 9am-2pm, Sat-Sun 36 hours, Wed 10am-2pm
Class Description:
This five day Wood fired ceramics workshop allows participants to bring 10 to 20 bisque fired pots (various shapes and sizes) of stoneware and porcelain to glaze and fire for a very reasonable price. A class of this length is regularly priced over $500.
During the first day, Wednesday, we will focus on glazing for the shino chamber and a separate salt chamber. A variety of cone 6 glazes will be provided as well as several shino glazes. This will be a mid-range wood fire as in La Borne France. In the second chamber we will salt fire pots, some glazed, some with just ash and salt as the finish.
After the first day of glazing we will apply wadding to the bottom of each pot to keep it from sticking and then load the 1st chamber (the shino chamber) then brick it up, seal it and move to the salt chamber.
By Friday afternoon, both chambers will be loaded and sealed, and we will warm up and dry the kiln with gas while enjoying a nice dinner and some beverages. On Saturday morning we will begin a 2 day firing with wood. The group will be split up into 2 or 3 shifts depending on the size of the class. Steve and another experienced wood fire potter will supervise the firing phases, but all will be present for the final phase of salting and sealing the kiln. Then a Champagne toast to the kiln gods....it's a tradition. The kiln takes about 3 days to cool which means we unload on the following Wednesday morning.
The Jax is willing to ship pottery to participants that can not stay to unload the kiln. Steve encourages prospective students to contact him about clays used for this firing and any other questions at stevemitchellpottery.com.
