About The Artists:
Darcy Meeker tools copper (from earrings to 38-foot wall work and creates sculpture in stone, clay, silk, aluminum. In her mixed media work, she paints, collages and prints on a variety of materials with the same wide-ranging enthusiasm. She also works in light, currently developing a walk-through light sculpture/experience that will be part of a Roanoke art in the park program this summer. Darcy has been working as a professional artist for over twenty years. She has written for Sculpture Magazine’s online edition and Sculptural Pursuits magazine. She writes and gives workshops on the healing power of making art and teaches stone, copper, clay, gouache, and fabric art to young and old alike in southwest Virginia. She has taught stone-carving at the Vermont Carving Studio and founded a stone-carving group in Blacksburg, VA. Her own stone-carving teachers include Bob Lockhart of Louisville, KY, Hanneke Zwart of The Netherlands, and the late Bernard Matemera of Zimbabwe. She has also studied art at the New School in New York City, at the University of Florida in Gainesville, at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, at the Studio School in Roanoke, VA, and at Virginia Tech.
Shaun C. Whiteside works with acrylic paint in a style most influenced by Abstract Expressionism, with an emphasis on the metaphysical and emotional realm, rather than on optical reality. Using several layers of thin glazes, partially washed away, he creates oppressively dense atmospheric environments, with biomorphic, liquid shapes within them. Whiteside graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Christopher Newport University in 2007, and earned his Master of Fine Arts at Radford University in 2011. He has recently been awarded both a Best in Show at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center's 2010 Biennial Exhibition, as well as a 2011-2012 VMFA Fellowship grant, and his works are in several private collections across Virginia.
The Meeker Home Art Studio is located at 3452 Spur Street in Blacksburg, Virginia.
