Description:
Virginia Tech presents Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma for a lecture and musical performance on Tuesday, March 5th in the Hillcrest Dining Hall.

Composer and virtuoso Naseer Shamma is the leading exponent of the Iraqi style of oud (11-stringed Arab lute)performance. A humanitarian and activist whose charitable activities include relief work for Iraqi children, Shamma experienced persecution for years under dictator Saddam Hussein's regime.

This is his first US tour since the US invasion of Iraq. Shamma hopes the passion and virtuosic precision of his music will serve as a bridge between cultures and help promote empathy, respect, and mutual understanding.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will be held following the event.

Sponsors: Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, Office of the Associate Vice President for International Affairs, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University Honors, The Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, Institute for Policy and Goverance, and Dean's Advisory Committee on International Initiatives.
