The Glencoe Museum presents a special lecture entitled "Sic Semper Tyrannis: Something About J.W. Booth" and reception for the opening of L.S. King's photography exhibit on Thursday, February 28th.

On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre and forever altered the course of a nation. What kind of person is it that is willing to do the unthinkable for his beliefs? And when he did this heinous crime – surviving afterwards as a hunted prey, wounded and discouraged by those he thought loyal – did he take a deep breath and the see nature change? Or did he think perhaps that the world would just stop?

In her talk “Sic Semper Tyrannis: Something About J.W. Booth” to be given at Glencoe Museum, L.S. King will speak to these questions and discuss the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. She will also describe Booth’s escape after the assassination, which led to a massive manhunt. She will also speak on the fates of the conspirators involved. Her talk serves as a companion to her photography exhibit now on display at Glencoe Museum.

The body of photographs explores the sites equated with the Lincoln Assassination Conspiracies and the backgrounds of the conspirators. Begun in 2000, the exhibit depicts the modern landscapes at pivotal points along the assassination trail. The focus of each image is about the atmosphere the artist experienced during this artistic journey, as well as the overwhelming emotions that mark this particular event in history. King would also say that her photographs try to make sense of the idea of place being affected or left behind by time.

King holds an MA from Atlantic University and a BFA from Shepherd University. She is the principal of King Smith Studio and the Tiny Picture Company and Correspondence Service, and spends most of her time writing and making photographs. Currently she resides in Southwest VA and Tennessee.

The talk will take place from 6:00 to 7:00, and will be followed by a reception for the opening of L.S. King’s photography exhibit at Glencoe Museum, which will end at 8:00 pm. Everyone is welcome. There is no admission charge.
