Celebrate the birth of George Washington with Historian Phillip Spence as he presents a lecture titled "George Washington: America's First Great Leader" at the Blacksburg Library on Thursday, February 21st.

As we acknowledge the anniversary of his birth on February 22, 1732, it is appropriate to honor the memory of George Washington’s service to us. History enthusiast Phillip Spence offers a more in depth look at the life and career of George Washington during this program.

While most of us think we know George Washington, the first president of the United States, the “Father of our Country” whose face stares up at us from the dollar bill, myths have grown up around his life. But what do we know about his character, his attitude towards slavery, or Valley Forge, the defining moment in our War for Independence? And did he really cut down a cherry tree?
