Musician Joey Cox grew up listening to bluegrass music with his family and playing it as long as he can remember. He started playing in a band situation at age 10 with his Grandpa's band the "Black Mountain Ramblers."
Inspired by banjo legends like Scott Vestal, Sammy Shelor & Jodi King, Joey began attending different festivals throughout Virginia and the Carolinas. After placing at many local competitions, he joined the Hillsville-based group, "Fast Forward." Joey has also played in bands Blue Ridge, Lou Reid & Carolina and with the legendary Doyle Lawson and his band Quicksilver.
The Zephyr Lightning Bolts play old-time string band music at festivals, competitions, and dances in Western North Carolina. The group formed in the early 1980s with husband and wife Steve and Diane Bowen. Their son, Jacob, joined the band as fiddler in the 1990s to complete the core of the current lineup, which also includes guitar player Eddie Butcher.
The Zephyr Lightning Bolts have released four CDs. They have performed at many fiddlers' conventions and have won prizes at Galax Fiddler's Convention, Ashe County Fiddler's Convention, Alleghany Fiddler's Convention, and the Laurel Bloomery Fiddler's Convention.
