The Shawsville Ruritan Club is hosting an Evening of Beans and Banjos with musical acts Mike Gangloff, the Ephraim Vause Memorial String Band and Anna and Elizabeth on Saturday, January 26th in the George R. Smith Community Center located inside Shawsville’s Meadowbrook Center. The dinner includes beans and cornbread along with a dessert.

Mike Gangloff will start things off, playing traditional songs on banjo and fiddle. Mike is a founding member of The Black Twig Pickers who also tours on his own. Mike plays and talks about songs born in Appalachia and songs that came across the ocean and took root in the mountains.

The Ephraim Vause Memorial String Band is a three-generation group that plays an eclectic mix of music on an eclectic mix of instruments. They’ve been known to pull out fiddles, guitars, banjos, Dobro, dulcimer, autoharp and even a banjo-ukelele to play Celtic music, old time fiddle tunes and hymns as well as songs from the Carter Family, Hank Williams and Uncle Dave Macon. Individually, they’ve collected ribbons at fiddlers’ conventions from Maury River to Mount Airy to Galax.

The stars of the evening are Anna and Elizabeth. They’re Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle, hosts of the Floyd Radio Show who sing and tell stories and perform crankies — an art form better experienced than explained.

This Evening of Beans and Banjos raises money for the Shawsville Ruritan Club and the club’s scholarship fund for graduates of Eastern Montgomery High School. The club suggests a donation of $5 person.

The event operates on granny rules: no drinking; no smoking; no cussing; no spitting on the floor.
