Join the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center Ground Breaking Celebration on Tuesday, January 29th. The celebration has been moved to Kent Square's second floor atrium.

The Alexander Black House is the grand Victorian home of Alexander Black, great nephew of Blacksburg’s founding father William Black. Alexander, his wife Liz Kent Otey and their daughter Mary Louise lived in the home until 1935. Black was a prominent business man and founding president of the National Bank of Blacksburg.

In 2002 with the development Kent Square, the Town of Blacksburg purchased and moved the Alexander Black House to its location on Draper Road. While awaiting restoration, the then Blacksburg Museum Committee pursued its mission through innovative traveling exhibits and programs without a physical structure to call home. The committee was also instrumental in the restoration of St. Luke and Odd Fellows Hall, a museum of African-American Culture on Gilbert Street. In 2010 the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization was formed, a capital campaign was launched, and the two entities were merged shortly thereafter.

Once completed, the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will serve as a repository for celebrating and preserving the rich history of our community and surrounding region. It will also be a cultural center highlighting local talent in the areas of visual and performing arts, and a venue for educational programming, and special events.

The Alexander Black House is located at 204 Draper Road in Blacksburg.
