ABOUT THE PLAY
Four African-American residents share memories of their lives in Southwest Virginia. Personal stories overlap, echo, and ricochet off one another, inviting a public dialogue about history, race, culture, memory, music, family, and faith.

"behind a stranger’s face" blends performed stories, flatfooting, stepping, old time music, and spoken word with opportunities for audience discussion. Come talk with us and each other in this community exploration of intercultural and interracial dialogue in our region.

BUILDING HOME
Members of the Building Home team developed behind a stranger’s face from New River Valley citizens’ stories. Building Home uses art as a medium for community visioning and dialogue. Since 2011, hundreds of local citizens from Pulaski, Montgomery, Giles, and Floyd counties and the City of Radford have been singing, sharing stories, and acting out their perspectives on life in the NRV with members of the BH team. The stories and perspectives recorded through Building Home are directly contributing to the New River Valley Planning District Commission's "Livability Initiative": a 3-year regional planning project.
