Description:
The Virginia Tech Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center, Department of Theatre and Cinema and The Women's Center at Virginia Tech are excited to bring a one night play and open mike performance of Rivka Solomon and Bobbi Ausubel's "That Takes Ovaries" at Deets Place on Thursday, November 15th.

The play, directed by Bryanna Demerly, is adapted from the book, That Takes Ovaries - Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts (Random House), a collection of real-life experiences, first person narratives, edited by Rivka Solomon. From playful to political, Ovaries mixes art with activism and fun in an international grassroots movement for empowerment. The event features a reading "a collection of real-life stories from women and girls about the gutsy, outrageous, courageous things they have done."

After the performance, audience members are invited to share stories about times they, or women they know, have acted boldly. The actors in energetic, playful movement and rhythmic sound call out "ovaries synonyms", gutsy, rebellious, self confident, adventurous, etc. The audience is then asked, "When have you been feisty, brave...a risk taker?" inviting them to be part of the story telling, of sharing their ovarian acts. True, heartfelt stories of women and girls, creating an atmosphere where courage is contagious.

This open mike production is about encouraging young women and girls on our campus to organize and speak out for themselves. We hope to raise awareness for women's needs, concerns and human rights. Everyone who speaks will receive a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil — a golden ovary.

The "That Takes Ovaries" performance is free and open to public, but donations will benefit local programs that help prevent violence against women.

This event is a partnership among the Women's Center, the Department of Theatre and Cinema, and the Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center.
