Description:
What happens when YOU have the next great idea? How can you protect it? How do you determine its value? To help tackle these questions and others surrounding the complex topic of intellectual property, New River Community College (NRCC) is hosting a workshop entitled “Establishing and Creating Value from Intellectual Property.”

The half-day workshop will take place on Friday, April 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at NRCC’s site at the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. The workshop fee will be $99. Registration deadline is Wednesday, April 25.

Participants will learn how to understand the legal and policy implications of intellectual property, create or improve an intellectual property management system and evaluate, valuate and leverage the value of intellectual property either through commercialization or licensing.

The workshop will be instructed by Michael J. Martin of Tech Transfer Associates in Blacksburg. Martin has over 30 years of business and product development experience and has held positions at E.I. DuPont, PPG Industries, Ciba-Geigy, Michigan State University and Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. In those positions, he was responsible for the development and transfer of advanced manufacturing technology; formulation and execution of new business entry plans; financial and market evaluations of acquisitions; national sales and market management; growth of community economic development strategies; and sourcing, screening, evaluation, marketing, licensing and patenting of inventions. Additionally, he is a recognized international speaker and author on technology transfer, intellectual property law, product development and implementing advanced manufacturing technology. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, a master’s degree in business and is a Certified Licensing Professional™.

Individuals interested in registering for this workshop may contact the NRCC Office of Workforce Development at 540-674-3617.
