Description:
Watch classic films under the stars outside Virginia Tech's Newman Library facing Torgersen Hall. This evening's film is entitled Metropolis.
Newman Library has a 16mm film collection of approximately 1600 titles. This collection has been built over the last 60 years, and contains films on subjects ranging from agriculture to metallurgy to war as well as several feature films. There are also several films in the collection that were produced on campus at VT in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Periodically, we pull select titles from this collection and put them on display in our front yard.
These screenings are free to all, and all are welcome. Pets are welcome too, as long as they're crowd-friendly. Free popcorn will also be available.
Film Information:
You don't want to miss the sci-fi giant, Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang in 1927. Aside from the science fiction subject matter, it is a beautiful example of art deco and German expressionism.
It follows Freder, son of the autocrat that created the city in the film, as he discovers that the city is built upon the toil of the working class for the comfort of the ruling class. While learning the truth about his father and the city, Freder becomes infatuated with Maria, a teacher who shows him what lies under the great city.
