Description:
Glencoe Museum will host a Victorian-style reception known as a kettledrum on Thursday, March 29th. This type of event was a popular entertainment for a lady to host in the late 19th century. A kettledrum often included refreshments and music and was an event that allowed the lady of the house to show her home to friends and acquaintances.
In the Victorian era, a woman’s primary role was in the domestic sphere; her home was where she could demonstrate her achievements and abilities. It was thus important to keep a home well maintained and to offer chances for friends to see her home.
Glencoe’s kettledrum will include interpreters in period clothing and a sampling of delicious refreshments. The highlight of the event will be live music performed by Soprano Claire Broyles with accompanist David Hopkins. Claire will sing parlor songs, which were a popular form of entertainment during the late 19th century.
Claire Broyles received a B.S. in Music from Radford University in 2008. At RU she studied voice under David Castonguay. Claire currently works at the Radford Public Library and performs with Blacksburg Master Chorale.
The kettledrum is open to the public. There is no admission charge.
