Description:
The Blacksburg Community Strings and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Åke-Eric Renqvist, opens its 2011-2012 season with a concert that explores a few of the less-well-known works by four very famous composers.

The program will be presented on Sunday, October 30, at 3 pm in the Recital Salon in Squires Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Concert music will include Beethoven's Coriolan overture, composed in 1807 for the play by Joseph von Collin and Schubert's Fourth Symphony (the "Tragic"), written in 1816, but not published until 1884.

The orchestra continues to present talented local musicians as soloists, including clarinetist Bruce McGarvey playing the Third Clarinet Concerto by forgotten clarinet soloist and composer Bernhard Crusell and cellist John Crawford playing the Romance for cello and small orchestra by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, from 1874.
