The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important celebrations of the Chinese year, will be observed Tuesday, September 20th at 7 p.m. in Radford University’s Preston Auditorium.

“The festival will be a fun and exciting opportunity to enjoy traditional Chinese food and culture as well as a performance of an event that is important to the Chinese people,” said Ciera Piggott, president of the university’s Chinese Club, festival sponsor.

Centered on the performance of a romantic story about the transformation of a woman into a celestial being, the festival will also feature the performance of the traditional mid-autumn poem Jing Ye Si, or Night Thoughts. Both performances will be in Chinese by members of the Chinese Club and the Kirk Scholars program with English translations.

Piggott, a junior forensic pathology student from Hampton, said the festival is a time for families to be together and for people far from home to gaze at the moon and think about their loved ones. Also known as Chinese Moon Festival, the observance is on the 15th day of the eighth Chinese lunar month.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important dates on the Chinese calendar – the other being the Chinese New Year – and is an official holiday. The traditional food for the occasion is the moon cake, which is round and symbolizes reunion.

The festival is free and open to the public. It will include traditional Chinese instrumental and choral music, dance and food, including moon cakes.
