Parting the Thick Fog of War: Developing Military Strategy during the American Civil War.

Join Radford University history professor Matt Oyos for a discussion about the development of military strategy during the American Civil War. The Civil War confounded military leaders. Their military schooling had focused on the alignment of objectives, forces, and resources against potential foreign foes but not the possibility of war against their brethren.

For this talk, the origins of 19th century strategic thinking will be explored, and the impact of various strategies on the conduct of the war will be assessed as the fighting evolved. Leading figures such as Henry Halleck, George B. McClellan, Robert E. Lee, and Ulysses Grant will receive special consideration as strategic thinkers and practitioners.
