A "most unusual" garden symposium features Amy Stewart, New York Times bestselling author of "Wicked Plants" and "Wicked Bugs."

August 27, 2011, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (4:00 if attending reception) at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Auditorium (across Washington St. from the Hahn Garden).

Other stuff: Includes lunch and a wine reception in the garden! We'll have Amy's and Paula's books available for purchase, which will benefit the garden. Amy and Paula will, of course, be happy to sign them for you. Lunch will be catered by Panera (yum!) and there will be wine, beer, light hors d'oeuvres, and mixing/mingling with the speakers at the reception. How can this not be tons of fun? -Holly

The Speaker/Author: Amy Stewart is the award-winning author of five books on the perils and pleasures of the natural world, including three New York Times bestsellers, Wicked Bugs, Wicked Plants and Flower Confidential. She has appeared on hundreds of national and regional radio and television programs, and written for every national garden magazine, including Fine Gardening, where she is a contributing editor. She lives in Eureka, California with a husband and some lovely hens.

The Speaker/Author: Paula Gross is the assistant director of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte Botanical Gardens. She has a masters in horticulture from the University of Georgia, and teaches courses on horticulture and plant identification. In addition, she writes a periodic column on horticultural issues and provides information on gardening questions.

The Speaker: Karen Rexrode. Karen owned Windy Hill Plant Farm for 25 years in Loudon County, specializing in perennials and fun annuals. The nursery closed in 2005 and Karen spent a year traveling and experimenting with photography. She taught for three years at Green Spring Botanical Gardens in Alexandria. She now works in the fabulous gardens at Oak Hill, the historical estate on Route 15. She feels very fortunate to be able to work in the dirt, yet strive for good composition behind the camera lens.
